Abstract : During this project, we have demonstrated the generation of coherent soft x ray pulses with sub 10fs duration. These results surpassed our own expectations. The coherent x rays are generated by high harmonic emission generated by focusing an intense femtosecond laser pulse into a gas jet. The increased time resolution (<< 100 fs) we have available is very important to enable the direct observation of atomic motion - we can resolve atomic dynamics (in chemical reactions and in phase transitions for example) on the timescale comparable to the first steps of the process.
