Abstract : The thrust of this research program was the development of new, compact sources of visible and ultraviolet (UV) radiation based on upconversion in rare earth doped crystals and glass fibers. Several applications in medical diagnostics, reprographics and displays, in particular, require reliable (preferably solid state), room temperature sources of low power (^< 1 W), CW radiation that have not, until recently, existed.
