Abstract : A Jarrell-Ash 21 foot grating spectrograph was adapted to direct reading by replacing the photographic plateholder with exit slits and photomultiplier tubes. Using a hollow cathode discharge tube for excitation of the sample and the isotopic shift effect, uranium 235 was determined in several samples by comparison with a single standard. The uranium 235 content of the samples and standards was known from mass spectrometer measurements to within 0.5% of the amount present at the 95% confidence level. For a determination consisting of 10 measurements, the precision obtained was from plus or minus 1.2 to 1.8% of the amount present over a concentration range of from 8% to 11.9% uranium 235.
