Abstract : This project represents a joint research investigation being carried out by scientists from Maxwell Technologies, Inc. and the Russian Institute for Dynamics of the Geospheres (IDG). The objective of the study is to use regional seismic data recorded from Soviet PNE tests to derive improved, quantitative bounds on the ranges of seismic signal characteristics which could be expected from underground nuclear explosions which might be conducted under the wide variety of source and propagation path conditions which must be considered in global test monitoring. A digital data-base of regional seismic data recorded from 63 selected Soviet PNE events at the Borovoye Geophysical Observatory in Central Asia has been acquired from IDG for use in this study and these data are being systematically analyzed to define the effects of source and propagation path variables on the spectral characteristics of the different observed regional phases. The results of these analyses are being used to derive improved constraints on the transportability of various proposed regional discriminants as they apply to underground nuclear explosions conducted over a wide range of testing conditions.
