Abstract : Forest communities add considerably to the total ecological diversity. During 1981 we studied the avifauna of the upper valley of the Pembina River in the Pembina Hills of North Dakota. The objectives of the present study were to determine densities and estimate the population size of breeding bird species, and describe the vegetative characteristics of the major forest and shrub habitats of the Pembina River gorge.
