Abstract : The present report represents the operating manual of the digital laser diode controller designed and fabricated at CRC. This report describes both the hardware and software of the controller. The unit allows the control of the temperature and current or power of up to one hundred lasers simultaneously. The system is built around a master controller which communicates the information between the user and slave controllers associated to the lasers. A liquid crystal display, a keypad and a rotary knob provide the user-controller interface. Microcontrollers, Motorola HC68HCl 1, are used on the master and slave controllers. The laser current may be adjusted from 0.00 mA to 200.0 mA with a 50 mA resolution. The optical power may be controlled from 0.00 mW to 40.95 mW with a 50 microW resolution. The temperature may be stabilized from 10.0 C to 35.5 C with a +/- 0.05 C resolution. The temperature and power controls are done digitally. The microcontroller, through analog-tc-digital converters, reads the temperature and power, analyze the results and set the current to a thermoelectric Peltier cell and to the laser diode injection current. The laser current is stabilized using an analog feedback loop.
