Abstract : This note is concerned with the formulation of a damped second order system as a first order dynamical system on a product space. This problem comes from the desire to have explicit representations of the infinitesimal generator of the first order system and in particular, of the domain of this operator. This analysis is motivated by the need to find specific representations for Riccati operators that can be used in the development of computational schemes for hyperbolic control problems. The approach we take here is based on a natural factorization of the differential operators that define the second order model.
