The study describes and analyzes the development of methadone maintenance as a treatment modality for opiod dependence and reviews the available observational research evidence on the effectiveness of methadone maintenance treatment, the basic facts about HIV and AIDS, and the epidemiology of HIV infection among injecting drug users.
