Abstract : The report presents the findings of the St. Louis District's assessment of 16 repositories at 11 facilities in five states that are curating Mobile District archaeological collections. A total of 7,084 cubic feet of artifacts and 558 linear feet of associated documentation, and 901 human skeletal remains were examined. Repositories were assessed for the adequacy of their storage structures, maintenance of facilities, existence of environmental controls, security measures, protection from fire and water damage, and the current status of the collections. Research by the St. Louis District showed that only one of the 16 repositories approaches the standards of 36 CFR 79. Objects, human remains, and associated records were found, in large part, to be in abysmal condition. In order to correct these inadequacies, recommendations are made for facility improvements. A plan for safeguarding the collections is presented. In addition, a bibliography of the archaeological survey reports relevant to the collections is provided for each repository.
