Abstract : The report presents the findings of the St. Louis District's assessment of 10 repositories that were curating archaeological collections recovered from the St. Louis District. The collections examined consisted of 3,417 cubic feet of artifacts and associated documentation. These collections were located in seven repositories in Illinois and three repositories in Missouri. Repositories were assessed for the adequacy of their storage structures, maintenance of facilities, existence of environmental controls, security measures, protection from fire and water damage, and the current status of the collections. In sum, the repositories examined were found to be inadequate as curation facilities. They lacked proper environmental controls, security, and protection from fire and water damage, and they were not properly maintained. Records were not properly associated with objects and were not properly stored. In order to correct these inadequacies recommendations are made for facility improvements and a plan is presented for the future safeguarding of these collections.
