Abstract : In this thesis I argue that the best justification for an environmental ethic for the US Army is one which is based on an anthropocentric or humanistic approach, and I evaluate the Army's Environmental Ethic in light of this. I then consider the Army's Environmental Ethic as a normative operational environmental ethic: an ethic which should help to guide commanders in the field, particularly in times of war. I conclude that the Army's stated operational-level Environmental Ethic is both appropriate and adequate.
