Abstract : To better understand and plan for the needs of a changing military force, the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) conducted the 1992 Surveys of Officers and Enlisted Personnel and Their Spouses. Specifically, this study was designed to assess whether certain groups of military personnel have more difficulty responding quickly to alerts/deployments such as the Gulf War, and how separations from their family affect the Service members and their families. Major findings of the study were: (a) more than half of the officers and enlisted personnel who were deployed during Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm (ODS/S) had dependents; (b) officers with dependents were more likely to report problems responding to ODS/S than were officers without dependents; (c) males were less likely to report difficulties in responding quickly to recall or alert than were females, however, males reported more concerns about their families when separated from them than did females; (d) officers and enlisted personnel with more education and higher pay were less likely to report difficulties responding quickly to alerts/deployment; and (e) enlisted personnel who had higher levels of satisfaction with military life were less likely to report concerns about their families while they were separated from their family.
