Abstract : To better understand and plan for the needs of a changing military force, the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) conducted the 1992 Surveys of Officers and Enlisted Personnel and Their Spouses. The surveys were designed to provide information on issues that affect military personnel, particularly military families, and guide the development of future personnel policies. The primary focus of the study was to analyze issues related to military child care. The focus of the analysis included: (a) factors that related to the cost of child care; (b) demographics and characteristics of military life that are associated with use and satisfaction with DoD-provided child care services; (c) characteristics of Service members who experience difficulties in responding quickly to recalls or alerts because of child care problems; and (d) factors that are related to the decision to select on- or off-base child care services. Results described gender differences among military personnel in the type of child care resources they utilized (i.e., other family members, day care, child care centers, schools). Other noteworthy findings addressed the importance of qualitative factors which influence child care selection decisions and problems encountered by single parents when confronted with recalls/alerts.
