Abstract : This report presents an experimental validation of elastic-plastic finite element stress analysis, using a unified constitutive model to describe the plastic response. The validation was done by experimentally measuring the elastic-plastic strain distribution around a circular hole in a flat plate under tensile loading and comparing it with that produced by a finite element analysis of the specimen using the unified constitutive model. The validation involved strain measurements using both strain gauges and full-field photoelasticity. The unified constitutive model was found to provide a significant improvement over classical plasticity modeling for the case of monotonic loading. A similar validation for cyclic plasticity has not yet been undertaken.
