Abstract : This report documents the design of the test rig and the results of the static test of the Lockheed P-3 Orion Wing Leading Edge centre section structure. The test comprised of two parts, viz., the validation of the structural integrity of the structure under design load conditions, and the determination of the static strength of the structure for the local transonic flight regime within which the RAAF Orion A9-754 had evidently failed. The test clearly showed that the structure meets its design specifications and had an adequate margin of safety even for the high speed regime. However, it is pointed out that this margin can be quickly eroded if the material thickness is below specification, as was reported for the case of Orion A9-754, and it is recommended that this aspect be investigated for the RAAF Orion fleet.
