Abstract : The current very high frequency (VHF) air/ground (A/G) communication system is based on Double Sideband Amplitude Modulation at a channel spacing of 25 kilohertz (kHz). Communications within this band for air traffic control communications is now almost entirely by voice. The system is approaching capacity in the high traffic density areas of Europe resulting in the need for a new more spectrum efficient radio architecture. European States favor transition to an analog channel split system. This paper describes an alternative approach wherein transition would proceed directly to a digital system. This digital system is based on a time division multiple access (TDMA) approach that maintains the current 25 kHz channelization. This alternative approach emphasizes near term implementation of the voice function with data link functionality to follow later.
