Abstract : An alternative work schedules (AWS) program was implemented in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness in March 1995. To assess the impact of the program, an electronic survey was conducted of all employees in Personnel and Readiness offices during January-March 1996. Four areas were identified as key issues in evaluating the program: satisfaction, organizational performance, reductions in time away from work, and potential disadvantages of the AWS. Major findings of the survey include: employees participating in the AWS program rate it very favorably; employees not allowed to participate would like to have the program available; managers are supportive of the program and give it favorable ratings; and, almost all personnel concur with the decision to implement AWS, whether or not they are personally participating in the program.
