Abstract : Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is an oxidizer used as a component in solid rocket propellants, munitions and fireworks. An in vitro developmental toxicity screen was performed to determine the developmental hazard index (A/D ratio) for AP using the hydra assay. Hydra attenuata have the capability for whole body regeneration. The assay employs exposing both adult hydra and 'artificial embryos' composed of disassociated hydra cells to test compounds to investigate developmental toxicity. Results from the hydra assay of AP indicated the minimal effective concentration required to elicit a toxic response in the adult hydra and in the regenerating hydra were 600 mg A/L and 350 mg AP/L, respectively. The A/D ratio of 1.71 determined that AP should not be considered a primary developmental toxin in the context of this assay.
