Abstract : The author examines the probable future U.S. role in the international security environment. He identifies, analyzes, and assesses the potential roles that the U.S. Armed Forces can be expected to perform within the expected geostrategic conditions. The author addresses the emerging role of preventive defense and assesses the implications of increased reliance on this concept on national and national military strategy. He concludes that the U.S. military will continue to perform its traditional roles of deterrence, reassurance, compellence, and support to the nation.
