Abstract : This paper discusses a technique for modulating and demodulating M-ary CPFSK using an FFT based modem typical of Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (COFDM), also known as Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT), systems. COFDM is one of the more promising spectrally efficient, high data rate modulation techniques for mobile digital communications. This paper shows that legacy CPFSK radios like the AN/GRC-226 (binary CPFSK at 256, 512, 1024, and 2048 kbps) used by the U.S. Army could be easily implemented in a DMT modem originally designed for higher data rate and better spectral efficiency than the legacy radio. MATLAB code is included that simulates the modem.
