Abstract : Ionizing radiation from cobalt-6O gamma and electron beam sources are used to investigate methods to improve the abrasion resistance of polyurethane elastomers. Radiation curing of acrylated urethane oligomers and grafting acrylonitrile onto polyurethanes were studied. Low energy electron beam and plasma surface treatment was also performed. A special device was developed to measure edge abrasion, ie. the abrasion of folded surface. This work demonstrated that radiation grafting techniques are an effective technique for improving the edge abrasion resistance of polyurethane, with minimal changes in the bulk mechanical properties.
