Abstract : This study examines the new leadership and ruling bodies produced by the 13th Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Congress and discusses the current political process and configuration of power in China. The new leadership and power structure are compared with those of the 12th CCP Congress, held in September 1982. Also analyzed are innovations in ideology and policy associated with the 13th CCP Congress, the leadership succession question, and the problems of and the long-range prospects for the reform prugram in China.
