Abstract : Solar thermal propulsion is a highly efficient, economical, and innovative alternative to current chemical orbit transfer propulsion systems. The Propulsion Directorate of Phillips Laboratory has been aware of the potential for this type of propulsive system for over 30 years. Throughout those years, the concept was revisited numerous times, in the form of basic concept verification and feasibility studies, until finally, a solar thermal propulsion test facility was established in 1983 at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The present configuration of the facility remains the world's premier solar thermal research and development test laboratory. Within the past ten years, component development has advanced significantly, such that it has achieved a level where full system demonstrations are being initiated. The next 15 years will see a number of system configurations tested, and will eventually lead to the production of a fully operational solar thermal orbit transfer vehicle.
