Abstract : In 1996, the highlight of our research is undoubtedly the discovery of a new, large family of homeotic genes in the human breast. These genes were cloned, partially characterized, and their expression has been studied. They are activated in lumenal breast epithelial cells. We feel that the discovery of the IRX family of homeogenes will open the door to a wealth of interesting studies in the mammary gland and in embryogenesis. Our approach is to use the mouse mammary tumor model system for those observations and experiments that describe the patterns of expression of these genes.
