Abstract : Significant progress has been made recently in retrieving source mechanisms from regional broadband seismograms. A consequence is that the magnitude threshold of events that can be analyzed has been lowered to less than 4. Because of the frequent occurrence and relatively simple source functions of earthquakes in the magnitude range of 3-5, their waveforms are ideal for investigating regional structures, which is of great importance for delineating fault structures and understanding path effects for ground motions from large earthquakes.
