Abstract : This is a report of progress on theoretical calculations of the scanning tunneling microscopy spectra near impurities in superconductors. Calculations have been performed for isotropically gapped superconductors using a newly developed Green's function technique. This technique provides essentially arbitrary energy resolution and is applicable to strong or weak coupling superconductors with long or short coherence lengths and arbitrary order parameters. An analytic model has been developed for impurities in superconductors with isotropic gaps. Calculations for superconductors with anisotropic gaps indicate resonant states within the gap with very asymmetric lineshapes. These resonances mimic the expected signature of a two gap superconducting state.
