Abstract : This interlaboratory study of the Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay (FETAX) was undertaken in order to assess the repeatability and reliability of data collected under the guide published by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Another goal was to test 13 chemicals specified by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. FETAX is a developmental toxicity screening test useful for detecting environmental toxicants. The entire study was divided into 3 phases and the third phase was divided into 3 parts. Phases 1, 11 and Phase III, part 1 were covered previously. The scope of this report is Phase 3-Part 2 covering the repeatability and reliability of the Aroclor 1254-induced metabolic activation system (MAS) with FETAX and Phase 111-part 3 which concerns the testing of 13 chemicals for NTP. One chemical, 1,2 dichloroethane, was extremely volatile. Results for this chemical were deleted from this report since the report is in journal format. Phase III, part 2 showed that FETAX could yield repeatable results for one proteratogen and one chemical that was deactivated by MAS. Phase III, part 3 provided developmental toxicity data on twelve compounds that had previously been tested in mammals. Results indicated that FETAX could be used in testing for developmental toxicants.
