Abstract : This case study examines the implementation of deep battlespace synchronization (DBS) within geographic combatant commands and joint task forces. The study is important to the joint military operations literature because it offers a comprehensive analysis of DBS which never has been conducted. The manuscript investigates the research question which asks: How does a joint force commander synchronize activities in deep battlespace with the greatest unity of effort while achieving campaign objectives? The paper is organized using a contingency framework for analyzing various organizational responses to DBS within changing and uncertain environments. It relies upon a triangulated research design including interviews, archival data, and secondary documentation. Findings are presented from the geographic combatant commands. The functions and processes used by each command to synchronize deep battlespace activities are presented. Two levels of recommendations are offered. Short term recommendations concentrate on changes to make now to improve DBS throughout the commands. Long term recommendations focus on future organizational structure changes helping warfighters exploit opportunities provided by emerging systems technology.
