Abstract : Sediments from the New York/New Jersey Harbor must be routinely dredged to maintain navigable water depths for shipping channels and berthing areas for commerce and safe navigation. Ocean disposal has historically been used as the primary alternative for disposal of dredged materials. However, the sediments that accumulate in the Harbor may contain contaminants at concentrations high enough to prohibit direct ocean disposal or beneficial use. This study evaluates solidification/stabilization (S/S) as an alternative to ocean disposal for the New York/New Jersey Harbor sediments. Generic binder formulations were evaluated to determine if S/S could treat the harbor sediments and the contaminants that are found in the sediments. The solidified sediments were subjected to various physical and chemical leach tests to determine the effectiveness of S/S for the sediments and to determine if the solidified sediment could have beneficial use.
