Abstract : Like private industry, DOD is subject to environmental, safety, and health laws and regulations. To meet the requirements of these laws and regulations at its installations, DOD has organized its environmental program into five areas: compliance, cleanup, conservation, pollution prevention, and technology. This report covers the two largest of these areas-compliance and cleanup, which at $2 billion each, account for more than 88 percent of DOD's fiscal year 1997 environmental budget of $4.6 billion.
