Abstract : The need for a survey report on the 'state of the art' with respect to 'Toxicity and Fire Hazards Associated with Shipboard Materials' has long been evident. A series of disastrous fires on surface vessels of the Navy, starting from the terrible damage suffered by the BENJAMIN FRANKLIN in World War II and ending most recently in 1967 with the FORRESTAL, has focused rapidly increasing attention on the subject of fire prevention and fire hazards to the crew.
