Abstract : Significant changes are occurring in the force structure, operational tempo, and the roles and missions of the military for operations other than war. Strategic policy and military doctrine are evolving and exit strategy is a dominant factor in these trends. This study explores the nature of exit strategy. It reviews the changes in the post-Cold War military and the evolution of exit strategy. The paper defines the types of exit strategy and establishes criteria for an effective strategy. It relies on current documents and case studies of various peace operations to examine exit strategy.
