Abstract : This report is concerned with the application of general purpose finite element structural analysis programs to warhead design work. The capabilities of a number of linear and nonlinear programs including NASTRAN, SAP IV, ADINA, and HONDO are described. These programs are used to solve a number of impact type problems ranging in complexity from a simple one dimensional rod to a conical steel warhead filled with explosive. The results are compared on the basis of accuracy, time and cost, ease of learning, and ease of use.
