Abstract : Conversion of the Navy's Mobile Utilities System Equipment (MUSE) diesel generators to dual fuel (natural gas plus diesel fuel) operation to reduce their NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions is described. The Navy maintains a fleet of 60 such units, powered by EMD 645 engines, that range in size from 1,500kW to 2,500 kW. A means for providing low-NOx MUSE generators that will not compromise the operational capability of the fleet is required. This guide is based upon the experience gained from converting a 1,500 kW MUSE unit to dual fuel operation (the unit is currently installed and operating at King's Bay Naval Station in Georgia). Information on the conversion process, operation, maintenance, and the cost of the dual fuel conversion are provided.
