Abstract : Virtually every government organization buys and consumes material to support its operations. This report addresses what government executives need to know about the logistics of distributing those materials within an organization. The topics presented result from recent research the Logistics Management Institute (LMI) has done for various public-sector organizations. We address four specific subjects: when to stock items in an internally managed facility, how to determine the true cost of distribution, using automation in a logistics operation, and improvements common to many organizations we have studied.
