Abstract : This research program is directed towards the demonstration and development of compact sources of visible and ultraviolet radiation. One of the most significant accomplishments of the past two years is the demonstration of microdischarge devices fabricated in silicon. These devices are cylindrical in cross section with diameters < 400 um, lengths of several mm, have specific power loadings > 500 W-cm3 and are capable of operating at pressures above one atmosphere. Another highlight of this research effort is that the first fiber laser pumped by a red diode laser was demonstrated; a green Ho doped fluoride glass fiber laser pumped by a 25 mW red diode laser has a pump power threshold < 5 mW, the lowest for any visible fiber laser. Also, the ability of atomic wavepackets to produce coherent radiation in the UV was also demonstrated.
