Abstract : Localization and the formation of spatial discontinuities indicate the onset of failure in materials which are subjected to degradation from a continuum into a discontinuum. In this project explicit analytical and geometrical Mohr-type envelope methods were developed to determine discontinuous failure modes in elastoplastic softening and elastic damaging materials. These localization results were obtained for classical non-polar continua in order to assess the regularization properties of non-classical micropolar Cosserat continua which feature non-symmetric stress and strain tensors because of the presence of couple-stresses and micro-curvatures. It was shown that micropolar media may only exhibit localized failure in the form of tensile mode I, while shear failure appears only in a distributed form without forming discontinuities.
