Abstract : This report details and investigation into the feasibility of thermal decomposition (non-hydrolytic) of aluminum hydride (AlH3) for hydrogen production. A unique new process, referred to as the self-sustaining (SS) reaction, was developed, along with a prototype generator and cartridges of AlH3 for use in the generator. Tests performed indicate repeatable, rapid hydrogen production and a safe reaction. Issues of controllability are addressed for future work.
