Abstract : This report describes the results of a Phase I archaeological survey of 207 ac. within the Stump Lake Waterfowl Management Area, located in Pool 26, Illinois River (mile 7.2 to mile 12.7, left bank), Jersey County, Illinois. The project involves construction of levees, water control structures, pump stations boat ramp and access road. Pedestrian survey and screened shovel testing located one turn of the century residential/season site (11-Jy-283) determined ineligible. Geomorphological investigations identified two native ground surfaces buried beneath recent silt. Because these buried surfaces have potential to contain significant cultural resources, the project was modified to avoid them. Clearance of this project in regard to cultural resources is recommended. The survey was conducted in March 1994 by American Resources Group, Ltd., for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District on lands managed for waterfowl by the Illinois Department of Conservation. The project is planned under the Habitat Rehabilitation Project (HREP), Environmental Management Program (EMP) established to enhance and rehabilitate the Upper Mississippi River System.
