Abstract : During April of 1863, Union forces under the command of General Joseph Hooker crossed the Rappahannock aimed for Richmond. Spread thin and possessing half the forces, Lee was forced to go on the offense to save his under strength Army. Lee's actions at Chancellorsville enhanced his reputation as a warfighter while serving his countries higher strategic purpose. This paper reviews the strategic setting, a review of the battle and key events, followed by an analysis of Lee's ability to correctly balance the operational art factors of time, force, and space.
