Abstract : Low-vulnerability (LOVA) gun propellants offer an attractive approach to the reduction of the probability of catastrophic kill of armored weapon systems resulting from the initiation of on-board ammunition. The particular attributes of LOVA propellants which contribute to the desired impact on vulnerability include reduced ignitability and decreased burning rates at low pressures. These same characteristics, however, may influence other aspects of the ballistic cycle, unintended and unexpected by the propellant/charge.
