Abstract : A numerical study of the flow of liquid propellant (LP) in a regenerative LP gun (RLPG) is described. The model simulates the flow of LP from the liquid reservoir, through the orifice, and into the combustion chamber. The model is based on a space-time finite element method and can automatically handle the deformation of the computational domain. A mesh moving scheme is used to update the mesh at every time step. Two shots of the 30-mm RLPG are studied. One is a small charge shot, and the other is a medium charge shot. The results from the simulations compare well with data from another numerical model of the RLPG and with experimental data. The simulations provide qualitative details of the transient phenomena that occur in the orifice during the firing cycle. The agreement of the results from the model with experimental data provide confidence in the accuracy of the model. The numerical model will be used to study several RLPG shots under a variety of conditions.
