Abstract : This report presents initial research into the design of a new computer system local area network transport layer protocol, designated the network memory protocol, which provides clients with direct access to data within the random access memories of servers. The server function executes within the operating system kernel without the use of sockets. The protocol is intended primarily for high throughput, real time database systems. The report presents the motivation for design decisions regarding address mapping, message formats, atomic coordination, time synchronization, and UNIX kernel implementation. Server performance results are compared with those for servers employing socket protocols.
