Abstract : The old world order of a known enemy and predictable arena of battle, with an existing support structure and facilities, is gone. Gone also are adequate defense budgets and automatic advances in weapon systems to assure the fielding of cutting-edge technologies. Potential adversaries in the new world order are many and unpredictable, and the research and development efforts of both the former eastern and western superpowers are being used to upgrade the air forces of nations around the world, friend and foe alike. The result of all these events is a new kind of challenge that must be met with creative solutions in order to assure continued USAF air superiority in any future conflict.
