Abstract : McClellan AFB has four soil vapor extraction (SVE) systems operating to remediate soil contaminated with chlorinated organic compounds. Treatment of the exhaust gases from these systems is expensive and could be enhanced by using a bioreactor treatment system. Following a chemical analysis of the contaminants in the SVE off-gases, a literature search was conducted to identify the scientific basis of several treatment options. A reference list of 175 sources is provided. The various types of available bioreactors and the treatment processes used are discussed along with the rationale for the selection of a biotrickling filter system to be tested in the laboratory prior to installation at McClellan AFB.
