Abstract : Innovative bioremediation technology was evaluated for its effectiveness at removing petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants from a site featuring clay soils underlain by a partially cemented sandstone with an extensive smear zone. Smear zone was dewatered to facilitate soil aeration and the clay layer was aerated by forced air injection. Significant mass removal mechanisms included volatilization and biodegradation.
