Abstract : This report describes a specially designed instrument that was used during a full scale fatigue test of an F/A-18 bulkhead to support the acquisition and analysis of acoustic emission (AE) data for the investigation of crack initiation and growth. This device, developed by the author, comprises both hardware and software and generates binary data in real time that indicates the sign of the gradient of an applied spectrum load signal. This design overcomes the inherent limitations of conventional analog slope detection methods applied to slowly varying aperiodic waveforms.
