Abstract : The DOD funds were used by the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry of the University of Massachusetts for the acquisition of light scattering and electrophoresis instrumentation: (1) An electrophoresis and dynamic light scattering system for particle size and complete zeta potential/mobility measurements. (2) A light scattering system with a 2 watt Argon-ion laser and goniometer allowing rapid multiangle static and dynamic measurements for in-situ nucleation and growth studies. (3) An X-ray attenuation particle size for rapid particle size measurements down to 10nm with superior resolving capacity to complement the above instrumentation. The instrumentation is fully functional and located in Goessmann Laboratory at UMass in the laboratories of the PI's and is used for studies on Nucleation and Growth of Nanoparticles and Processing of Colloidal Nanophase Suspensions for Device Fabrication. Four graduate students are using the instrumentation for their PhD projects.
