Abstract : Sediments are both a source and a sink for persistent contaminants which enter the aquatic environment. Sediment quality assessments involving sediment bioassays began at about the same time as environmental risk assessment (ERA) procedures (the early 1980s), and the two processes have evolved in parallel but separately. However, they have not been formally integrated into a single process. The purpose of the Workshop and of its resulting product, this books, is to provide a framework for integrating sediment quality assessment with ERA, provide guidance for common applications, and define actions which can be taken to advance the application of ERA to contaminated sediments. The ultimate objective was to significantly advance the state- of-the-practice of sediment assessment, attempting to balance environmental risks with the cost of environmental protection.
