Abstract : This project is to improve the diagnosis and management of patients with breast cancer through development and evaluation of 3D ultrasound imaging and quantification techniques emphasizing vascularity. Progress this first year included some development of our existing methods for 3D breast ultrasound. These developments included refinements of power mode and frequency shift Doppler acquisition, quantification and display of vascularity. Most effort was directed to three longer-range topics: 1) image registration using the mutual information cost function for evaluation/ demonstration of image compounding and sequential examinations; 2) approaches to real time image-based registration (IBaR) for 3D slice positioning; 3) the effort to image lactic ducts in 3D.
